Rain slows down road repairs
WARWICK'S wild, wet weather has not only created potholes across the region but it is also slowing up already scheduled repair works.
Southern Downs Regional Council works manager Eric Kraak said patches of road had been left unsealed for longer periods of time as a result of the rainy period.
"Generally the process is that the pavement works are completed first and then at regular intervals when there are a number of pavement repairs ready, a bitumen sprayer will be brought in and the patches sealed with bitumen and aggregate," he said.
"The recent ongoing weather has played havoc with the contractors sealing program and due to rain on days when the bitumen was planned to be applied it had to be called off."
While some motorists have questioned why council was repairing potholes with gravel, rather than bitumen, Mr Kraak said this was to maintain the roads until the weather permitted sealing to take place.
"As the surface is gravel, it deteriorates under traffic and the contractor has been trying to keep these patches maintained until the seal can be applied," he said.
Mr Kraak said a significant amount of sealing had been carried out yesterday and will continue today to catch up with the backlog of work.
