WITH up to 100mm of rain predicted to fall over Warwick by Thursday, Rose City residents could be in for the soggiest weather event since last summer's floods.

A severe weather warning was issued late yesterday for the Darling Downs, warning of heavy rain and a possibility of flash flooding this afternoon.

Swan Creek farmer Noel McConville, who also owns property at Emu Vale, said jovially he would be "very disappointed" if he didn't get the forecast downpours.

"I got (just over 4mm) the weekend before last, which relieved the situation, but it's been very dry," the cattle farmer said.

"The cracks in the ground are still quite visible. They have been there for nearly a month now."

Mr McConville said while his dams had "plenty of water", the past two years had spoilt local farmers.

"Those 30 years before when we had nothing but drought were pretty hard," he said.

Further south, Bapaume farmer John Sweet has lettuce and cauliflowers in the ground and said the rain, if it came, would keep produce "nice and fresh".

"We've been irrigating to keep it fresh and we've got quite a number of good dams that can hold up to 50 million gallons," he said. "Some dams are down by a metre, so it's been a pretty dry month."

The vegetable grower said some Stanthorpe growers, especially those with stone fruit and vines, would be worried too much wet might split fruit.

Weather Channel meteorologist Felim Hannify said a slow-moving upper level trough would kick in today.

"It looks like there will be heavy falls. Particularly parts of the eastern Downs, are likely to see heavy falls," he said.

"We've got a lot of moisture pumping into the system and it's fuelling the upper trough, which could persist for much of the week."

Between 15 and 25mm of rain is expected today; 25-50mm tomorrow and 15-25mm on Thursday.
