Raring for Rosebowl
QUEENSLAND representative Jess Lawrence will ride her 11-year-old mare Summer in the National Transport Insurance Rosebowl Championships at Morgan Park this weekend.
Lawrence played for the Queensland junior team in the 2010 nationals in Perth and is already eyeing off a spot in the Maroons under-24 women's team for the 2014 nationals in Darwin.
She first played polocrosse at Moree at the age of eight.
"I was the first member of my family to play polocrosse," she said.
Lawrence joined the Warwick club in 2007 when she started boarding at Scots PGC College.
This weekend, she will play in a Warwick mixed team and is set to play in the number 1 (shooting) position after being a defender most of her career.
She often plays in the same team as Test player Sally McGrath.
"Sally knows so much about the game and puts time in to help me," Lawrence said.
Club president Les Fraser said he expected more than 60 teams to nominate for the carnival in open, mixed and junior competitions.
"Teams will come from as far as Longreach, Bauhinia and Dirranbandi," Fraser said.
Two selected teams from Australian junior and intermediate squads will play each other on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday at Morgan Park.
Intermediate player Ryle Waugh (Cunningham) and junior pair Jacob Lawrence (Warwick) and Carly Cooper (Cunningham) will play in the national games.
