LETTER: Ratepayers have to say enough is enough
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. All rate- paying residents have to stand up and say no, we are not going to pay these exorbitant rates.
As a small business owner I know the importance of making a profit. If I don't, I close my doors.
How can the failed corporation that is the SDRC continue to trade and go further into debt?
Our town is going to continue to go backwards.
How can we attract investment, when we are becoming a very expensive place?
Rates in Toowoomba are $300 cheaper; rates in Brisbane cheaper; rates in Dubbo $300-$400 cheaper. People having to pay rates on vacant land?
Sadly, I predict that more and more shops will close. Talk to people who have to pay commercial rates and you will understand.
Property owners can't continue to put rents up, that will lead to empty buildings and homes.
I read with interest that the SDRC inherited a debt from Stanthorpe. Can someone tell us what happened to the $19 million that was sitting in the bank for the EMU Swamp Dam project?
Yes, we know it was used by the newly formed SDRC to pay wages, because they were broke.
Well, eight years on, they are still broke.
