Readers mow down council over sport fields

DAILY News readers have mown down the council over the issue of sports field maintenance.

There was plenty of conversation on social media and the Daily News website about whether the sports fields should be maintained by the council.

Here's what readers had to say:

Have the Warwick sporting organisations been consulted?

Have levels of services provided to sporting organisations?

Please speak to the sporting organisations to seek their input into maintenance of their facilities.

If Southern Downs Regional Council could do all this it would be fantastic.

The only catch is another rate rise.

Are the councillors declaring that this is on the cards should they be re-elected because we all know they don't have the money to do it now?

I congratulate the councillors for letting us know about the next rate rise and what it will be for in advance.

Full Credit to the CEO for pointing out the core services will be provided if Councillors vote for another rate rise, we the community appreciate the notice prior to the election.

It would be fantastic if council could maintain all the sports grounds, do you begrudge the communities children having a place to play?

The only way Southern Downs Regional Council could afford to maintain all the Parks / sporting grounds is via a rate rise because they are broke.

So although not explicitly stated there would be a rate rise to implement the maintenance of sports fields, it is the only way it could be finance.

Stanthorpe prior to amalgamation had money in the bank and still managed to afford to supply basic services such as maintaining the sports fields.

Warwick Shire on the other hand already had debts.

Pretty good value for $200 a year I'd say. $90,000 worth of services all for an outlay of $200. All to benefit a limited number of people.

Let the lot of these sports associations maintain their own grounds and equipment in the same manner every other community association has to maintain their own grounds and equipment.

If it's good enough for one it's good enough for everyone... and I mean everyone. The Pottery Club, The Men's Shed, The Woodies, The Senior Citz... everyone who will be paying the $200 fee should be getting free maintenance if the sports mobs get it. Equality???

$500,000 to mow sports fields that are leased to associations. You've got to be kidding.

SDRC get $200 per annum for an outlay of $90,000 just in relation to just one sports association?? Scandalous.

"Cr Vic Pennisi said mowing fields came down to the question of what was the council's core business.

"Maintenance of those sporting fields is, in my view, the core business of council,"

Well do it for all of them then. How can it be considered consistent when one mob gets everything and another mob get didly squat?

SDRC cannot give entertainment for one of the biggest days for Australians (Australia Day) but are thinking about mowing everyone's lawn. Get your core business values right.
