Record Daily News Pentath-run tipped at weekend
RUNNING: Event director Neil Burtenshaw expects the number of athletes competing in all five legs of the Daily News Pentath-run this weekend to double the existing record.
The Pentath-run is being held for the 14th year and the previous best for all five events is 168.
This year, the record for all five events has been bettered with 281 already.
Burtenshaw is predicting another 40 nominations which will double the record.
Nominations have been received so far from 649 runners for one or more events which tops the previous best of 588.
Bertenshaw said many of the nominations an hour before events on the weekend would be for individual events so he expected total numbers to rise to between 800 and 900 individual athletes.
“Nominations close online at 6pm Thursday and can then be made between one hour and 30 minutes before events at the weekend,” he said.
“We are getting special Pentath-run singlets for each athlete who completes all five legs of the Pentath-run.”
There are a number of new initiatives this year, including free advice at the start of each race from Intraining and a discount for runners introducing friends.
Organisers will present more than 200 trophies, all handcrafted locally by potters or artists.
WIRAC/YMCA is sponsoring the half-marathon and is extending free weekend membership to each runner in all five events.
With record nominations, more volunteers are needed for the cross country at Allora and the 5km at Sandy Creek on Saturday.
