Records smashed as the temps soar

THE heat wave continues over the Southern Downs this week, with both Stanthorpe and Warwick smashing records.

According to Weatherzone, Stanthorpe recorded a top of 32.2C on Thursday, beating the 1977 record of 30.2C.

Warwick hit 35.1C on the same day, which is 11.7 degrees above average and the highest for September in 17 years.

However, there will be a slight relief at the weekend as temperatures drop slightly.

Warwick saw a top of 27.5C yesterday, and is expected to have maximum temperatures of 29C for both today and tomorrow .

Weatherzone meteorologists said the heat is due to a low pressure trough which dragged a warm air mass over the region, bringing hot and dry conditions and westerly winds.

As the trough moves through, winds are expected to come more from the south, which will bring cooler air and drop temperatures slightly.

It is predicted to warm up again early next week, with tops of 31C on Tuesday. There continues to be a high fire danger.
