Redbacks Anzac footy on Saturday in Warwick
THE Warwick Redbacks will start their season in the AFL Darling Downs competition with the Anzac Cup home game against Lockyer Valley on Saturday at 3.20pm.
The Veterans Support and Advocate Service of Australia Australian rules fixture is played at Warwick Credit Union Oval on a Saturday close to Anzac Day each year.
An Anzac Day Ceremony will be conducted before the men's game with involvement from VSASA, the Warwick RSL Sub-branch and the Redbacks club.
Warwick is playing in Division 2 men's this year under coach Peter Millard.
The club has been attracting 14 to 15 at training and has a squad of 24.
Players set to line up on Saturday include Cameron Peterson, Andrew Bardsley, Shannon Cameron, Bindi Sailor and the Wiedman brothers, Jason and Daniel.
Warwick might be in Division 2 this season but club officials are using it as a re-building year with a view to returning to Division 1 in 2018.
The Division 2 teams are Warwick, Highfields, Chinchilla, Dalby and Lockyer Valley.
Warwick and Lockyer Valley have combined to form a team in the women's competition and will play South Burnett at 1.30pm Saturday in Warwick.
Keith Clarke is co-coach of the combined women's team but runs Tuesday and Thursday afternoon training in Warwick.
"We have a squad of 20 between the two clubs and had 16 players at our first game in a loss to Souths on Saturday,” Clarke said.
"The club has a core group of girls who are driving the involvement of a women's team in the competition.”
The women's team is known as the Demonic Redbacks which comes from the Lockyer Valley Demons and the Warwick Redbacks names.
Due to the combined women's team, Warwick men and women will not always play at the same venue with home games for the women shared between Cahill Park at Gatton and Warwick Credit Union Oval in Warwick.
The teams in the women's competition are Souths, Warwick/Lockyer Valley, Toowoomba Tigers, Dalby, Goondiwindi and South Burnett.
The home games on Saturday will start at 8am with a full round of junior fixtures between Warwick/Lockyer Valley and Chinchilla/Dalby.
Games will be played in under-9, U10, U12, U14 and U16 age groups. Players are welcome to join any of the club teams.
Training for the juniors is at 4.30pm each Thursday with the men and women training at 5.30pm each Tuesday and Thursday.
Anyone interested welcome at training or can call Keith Clarke on 0417746595.
Players who have never played will be helped to start an Aussie rules career. With Warwick in Division 2 for the men, this season is a great opportunity to start a career at a lower level.
The Redbacks get together at the clubhouse from 6pm each Friday. The clubhouse is the venue for a Brighter Futures Auction this Friday from 6.30pm with proceeds divided between Redbacks and Safe Haven.
