Redbacks hungry for premiership
THE big question surrounding the Warwick Credit Union Redbacks is "can they bring home the silver at last?"
They took the first step with a 77-point win against South Toowoomba on Saturday which secured the minor premiership.
The last time this club won a premiership for the Darling Downs competition was in 1998.
This was a great thing, but the players at the club that were involved seem to add "yeah, but it was only a reserve-grade flag".
The year 2001 saw the then Palace Hotel Redbacks finish the home and away fixtures in third place.
Because they played the same team in both A-grade and B-grade week about, the players were given the choice of an A-grade GF to test them out or have a walk in the park trophy in B-grade.
To the players' credit they chose the challenge and made it through to the big one in A-grade. On the day Coolaroo were too good.
The year 2002 saw the Redbacks bring home the A-grade minor premiership, but again the Coolaroo nemesis struck.
The last GF appearance was against the Toowoomba Tigers in 2011 and yet more heartbreak.
The club now hosts the USQ Cougars in the September 6 qualifying final with the winner to play in the September 20 grand final at Rockville Oval.
