Redbacks manager incensed

REDBACKS football manager Colin Pope believes his team has no chance of beating USQ Cougars at Slade Park on Saturday if the team’s “passengers” don’t lift their performance.

“We had far too many passengers in the 42-point loss to Bombers on Saturday, all waiting for their teammates to go the hard yards,” Pope said.

“Unfortunately this attitude was not evident in only the last quarter, there were far too many periods throughout the game when the hitchhikers stood out from the battlers.

“The Bombers made better use of the football, ran to open spaces better, were more prepared to put their bodies on the line and they hit their target downfield far better.”

With games against USQ and equal favourites Tigers in the next fortnight, Pope said it was not a good look for the Redbacks coming up to the halfway mark of the season.

“Hopefully, a large numbers of passengers in the team get off the bus and start running with their team-mates or the club’s season will come to an abrupt end with no September action.

Weekend scorers: Bombers 19.4 (118) d Redbacks 12.4 (76).

Redbacks goal scorers: Clinton McErvale 7, Matt Sinkins, Stewart Day, Jason Wright, Mark Mills and Kris Millard 1 each

Best: Clinton McErvale, Kurt Millard, Matt Sinkins, Andrew Bardsley, Brendan Iles and Rob Devereux.
