Redbacks must win to play in top division finals

AUSSIE RULES: After winning a premiership in first-division last season in the Darling Downs AFL competition, Tyhe Clarkson is hoping to go back to back.

But first the Warwick Redbacks onballer will be out for a strong performance tomorrow when Warwick must beat second-placed South Toowoomba to make the top four.

The top-four will play off for the first-division flag and the next four will battle it out for second division.

Clarkson first played for the Redbacks in 2012 and won the Holman Medal for fairest and best in the league in first division in 2016.

With Warwick playing second division last season, Clarkson and the Iles brothers, Brendan and Shane, travelled to Toowoomba to play with a USQ team which won the first-division premiership. The Redbacks went down to Dalby in the second-division grand final in 2017.

"We definitely have a team which can beat any team in the competition,” he said.

"Everyone is keen and focusing on the job at hand this weekend.”

Clarkson said it was great to be back playing for his hometown.

"I can play in the same team as my mates each week and I am only two minutes from our training venue Warwick Credit Union Oval.”

He believes his combination with ruckman Alex Cutmore is working well.

"Alex is the best ruckman in the competition and we didn't have him when we went down to South Toowoomba in the first round,” he said.

"In round 1, we trailed by 28 points after the first quarter and then matched it with South Toowoomba in the rest of the game. A key will be to start well.

"Mitch Darton and Jack Fletcher are out this week but forward Kurt Millard is getting stronger each week after a hamstring injury.”

The game against South Toowoomba is at 2.30pm tomorrow at Heritage Oval at Mt Lofty.
