Warwick Redbacks nominate their own for recognition
AUSSIE RULES: Coen Slatter was overwhelmed by the support from fellow Warwick Redbacks players and supporters last week at the Redbacks AFC Steve Gray Medal Presentations.
Slatter was named as the winner of the prestigious Steve Gray Medal for 2015.
He won the vote count by a comfortable margin over runner-up Tyhe Clarkson.
An outstanding season by Brendan Iles had him well clear in the standings before a severe knee injury in round six of competition dashed any hopes of a fourth Steve Gray medal win.
Another three-time winner, Kurt Millard, also polled strongly throughout an injury-interrupted season but it was the consistently strong performance from Slatter throughout the year that gave him the title in the end.
Runner-up Tyhe Clarkson also has a bad run of injury in the first half of the season but emerged clear second place with a strong finish to the season.
Slatter said he was surprised by his win but counted winning the Seniors Players' Player as just as special.
"To be voted the winner by my fellow players was just really special," Slatter said.
"Winning the Steve Gray Medal was pretty amazing. I didn't expect it."
Slatter said he would use the off season to address ongoing knee issues that required medical attention.
"It's not the ACL, which is good, but they need to have a look at it and see just how bad it is yet," Slatter said.
Slatter is hoping the injury won't hamper his start to the season next year as the Redbacks look to improve on a 2015 season rife with player injuries.
"I might have to miss the first few weeks but I'll be aiming for the start of the season," he said.
"Winning the premiership last year and then having such a hard season with injuries the next was hard for the club."
