Redbacks on road to Highfields
WITH the largest squad to choose from this season, the Redbacks head to Highfields today with extra confidence.
The improvement in the Highfields club has been outstanding. They have played some good football – good enough to outplay the Redbacks should they become complacent.
The only Redbacks definitely out for the game are talented utilities Dave Walker and Andrew Politch and rugged defender Jason Hoole and, with only three players to be tested pre-game, the selection committee had a difficult time in the past 48 hours.
Final fitness tests will be done just before the game for Kris Millard, Rob Devereux and Fraser McLaughlin. Devereux will return to the defensive six after five weeks away with a hamstring injury.
McLaughlin will make his season debut after suffering a serious hamstring tear a fortnight before the season’s opener. Both players are confident of taking the field.
Rover Vaughn Skelly, wingman Gavin O’Leary and utility Paul Hutchins will all make a welcome return to the final 22.
A young, fast side, Highfields has an excellent mid-field and a tight defence, which will make for some entertaining football.
The Redbacks forward line, due to some smart football from mid-fielders, has kicked some high scores this season, even in defeat.
Steve Martin, arguably the best full-back in the competition, has bustling backs like Cameron Shannon, Andrew Bardsley and Mitchell Lamb to support him, and they could be the difference in the two teams when the final siren blares.
With Under 12s being the only Redbacks junior team travelling to Highfields, the U14s will have a day off and U8s and 10s will have normal Auskick and intraclub games at Slade Park from at 8.30am.
