Redbacks prepare for junior season
FRANK Davies was upbeat about the forthcoming Redbacks AFL junior season after 40 new Auskickers, aged five to 11 years, signed up for the first time.
Davies said the rain kept more people away so organisers would hold three more sign-ons in conjunction with training sessions before the start of the 2010 season.
The sign-ons are on February 27 and March 7 and 14 at Mayhew Oval on the corner of Weewondilla and Horsman roads.
Each Auskick sign-on is from 8.30am to 10am.
The Redbacks junior sign-on for players in the under-12 and older age groups as well as weekly training will be from 8.30am to 10.30am each Saturday at Mayhew Oval in conjunction with the Auskick sign on.
Davies said Auskick was well represented with fairly even numbers of girls and boys.
“In the next few weeks, children will learn the skills of kicking, catching, ball handling and the rules of the game,” Davies said.
“With current numbers, we will have at least four teams but hope for six or eight teams of Auskickers.
“Once we start playing, games will be in zones where kids of the same ability and age play together so everyone gets to have a go and have fun playing the game.”
During the season, Auskick children from across the Downs will be invited to play against the Warwick children in U8 and U11 age groups.
Junior play will be at Mayhew Oval until Easter and then at Slade Park until the junior season ends in August.
The first games for the juniors will be on March 27 against Pittsworth.
