Redbacks stand tall in cup
AUSSIE RULES: Saturday's results in the Cardinal Cup held at Jimboomba showed the host club had done its homework.
From the very first bounce of the carnival it set the bar and let it be known that it was there to take the trophy back.
Take it back it did and in fine style, four wins from four starts and playing no less than 38 players, all playing their respective hearts out for a grand final berth.
Congratulations must go out to Jimboomba president Darren Webb and all at his very professionally run club.
Both days on and off the field lacked nothing and accordingly it was another successful Cardinal Cup.
The umpiring standard was first class.
The Warwick Credit Union Redbacks can stand tall as they made it through to the grand final, the hard way, sustaining injury after injury and losing players along the way.
A very defiant and determined squad of 16 players hit the paddock running.
Playing two men short and with no interchange bench against a well-tuned unit of 18 men with four sets of fresh legs to call on was mission impossible.
When the Redbacks were down to 15 players by three- quarter time, the final siren seemed as if it was hours away but credit where credit is due.
The walking wounded came out for the final quarter heads up, chests pumped and bodies still being thrown into battle with little or no regard for themselves.
All concerned can be proud of their efforts.
The runners up tag in the carnival augurs well for a return to the winner's circle in the 2016 AFL DD season.
The final scoreboard read Jimboomba 12.10 (82) defeating Warwick 2.0 (12).
The curtain raiser to the grand final was played between Warwick Redettes women and Jimboomba Spider Girls with the home side winning by 17 points.
The standard of play displayed in this game has shown that the Cardinal Cup could use a full-on ladies' competition in future and that may occur as early as 2017.
Redbacks training for men, women and under-16 boys is each Tuesday and Thursday at 5pm. Under-8 and U10 training is at 4pm Thursday with U12 and U14s at 5pm.
