Redbacks star sacrifices personal honour for team
A PRE-GAME announcement from club captain Brendan Iles last Saturday was an act of true professionalism and a show of respect for his teammates in general and his successor in particular.
Alex Cutmore in his first year as vice captain has now taken the on field reins as club captain.
With Iles' playing obligations with Springwood in the Brisbane competition and his AFL future in mind he unselfishly handed over the captaincy to Cutmore, a decision that was greeted openly by the WCU Redbacks players and executive. Iles has had a great run at the club and has genuinely earned the right to look further afield.
With his natural flare for the game and a talent second to none in this competition he will go a lot further in the game outside of the Darling Downs than he could ever hope to do by staying.
Cutmore was to some a surprise selection for the vice captaincy, but not to senior coach Jason Wright.
When questioned about his decision Wright said, "Watch this kid mature and thrive on the responsibility of leadership" and that is exactly what Cutmore has done.
His overall game on the field has stood out this season and he is a credit to the club off the field.
A clever ruckman and a great clubman.
Congratulations from all at the WCU Redbacks go out to Iles and Cutmore, all the best to both of you in your respective futures in Aussie Rules.
