Redbacks team boost for new cricket season
CRICKET: Dave Drewery is one of the form batsmen in the Redbacks side, which will play Inglewood at Queens Park today.
The game has been moved from Mayhew Oval to the turf at Queens Park.
Drewery first played cricket in Warwick in 1981 and for two seasons in the then Back Plains competition before retiring in 1993.
He was involved with the Warwick Redbacks Aussie rules club and when the Redbacks started a cricket team and needed more players he agreed to play.
Drewery said he would never have made a comeback except for the Redbacks.
"I am enjoying it,” he said.
The Redbacks qualified for a A-grade finals series last season and ended up third and Drewery said he would be disappointed if the team didn't make A-grade again.
The Redbacks have two wins in two games and Drewery is upbeat about the batting.
"We have specialist batsmen down to numbers eight and nine,” he said.
Justin Wheeler is a new player coming from Toowoomba with opener Coen Slatter.
Wheeler bowls left arm orthodox spin and is a classy batsman while recruit James Kurtz has the perfect batting technique and bowls medium pace.
Redbacks footy captain Andrew Bardsley scored 48 not out last week.
There could be a lot of runs at Queens Park tomorrow.
"We chased down 270 in one game last season against Inglewood when captain Tyhe Clarkson hit a four off the last ball,” he said.
