Redbacks calling on turf layers
TURF now covers half of the Redbacks AFL grounds and the club is hoping for a large turnout of volunteers to finish the job today and tomorrow.
Last week volunteers within the club helped to roll out 9000 square metres and club vice-president Jason Wright hopes to see the same level of support.
“We're hoping the first lot of turf will arrive mid-morning and we'll lay into the evening,” Wright said.
“We've organised flood lights to allow that.
“The plan on Friday is to lay all day, given it's a show holiday.”
No experience with turf laying is required and the organisers will dole out duties suitable for each person.
“We've got a pretty good idea how to do it now. We spoke to the turf farm and they told us the easiest way to lay it, and we're a bit more organised and prepared now.
“Last time we had people staying on the ground and placing it and people carting it out and putting it down for them. As long as people can lay a slab of turf, that's all that's needed.
“Last week we had a lot of juniors doing it, and the senior men were carting two or three slabs at a time. It's really easy, it's just time consuming.”
The Redbacks club hopes to have the grounds ready in time for its first home match on May 21, in about eight weeks.
Wright said the just-turfed ground was looking pristine already.
“With the moist sub-soil and the rain, it's perfect. It's starting to become a really good playing surface.”
To help lay the turf, head down to the Redbacks AFL club this afternoon or tomorrow morning. Inquiries to Jason Wright on 0409 499 352.
