Warwick Redbacks take minor premiers title
THE Warwick Credit Union Redbacks have brought the 2014 AFL Darling Downs minor premiers title to Warwick.
In blustery, wet and cold conditions the Reddies laid claim to victory in the opening quarter by kicking three goals against a five-goal wind.
The final scoreboard read WCU Redbacks 18.13.(121) defeating the South Toowoomba Bombers 7.2.(44).
Using the wind to their advantage in the second quarter saw them kick away to a commanding lead by the main break and from that point on they never looked in doubt.
Credit must go where credit is due, the Bombers were missing a number of players from their line-up and they never stopped trying. The overall skill, fitness and running game of the WCU Redbacks was outstanding to say the least.
With the minor premiership title comes the gift of a home game major semi-final in a fortnight.
Having three talls to do the ruck work let skipper Alex Cutmore have some breathing space in defence and he held down the backman's role with ease. Steve Martin and Brent Walker became tagging style ruckmen and played effective games.
The midfield trio of Kurt Millard, Tyhe Clarkson and Brendan Iles played their normal dry day football games in the rain and made it all look easy, while Ashley Pitt, Chad Wilson and Coen Slatter all had great games.
Once again the entire team could come from the ground knowing they had played an important part in a very important victory.
The post-game advice from senior coach Jason Wright was: "Enjoy this victory tonight, but don't go overboard, the job is only half done. Switch back on tomorrow and be prepared for a solid two weeks of training".
