The Good Beer Co reef donations are closing in on target

JAMES Grugeon's The Good Beer Co is on its way to saving the Great Barrier Reef one stubbie at a time.

It has been two weeks since the Good Beer Co launched its campaign to raise the $100,000 needed to start brewing and so far it has about $13,000.

Once the beer is brewed and hits pubs and bottle shop shelves around Australia, Mr Grugeon will donate 50% of all sales to The Australian Marine Conservation Society.

"We'll be pushing to get up to $25 to $30 grand by the end of this week," he said.

"We'll be heading for the $100 grand after Christmas."

Mr Grugeon said crowdfunding could be a slow process but he was confident he would reach his target.

"It can take a while for crowdfunding campaigns to take off and at the moment we've gone from five to 10 donations a day up to 25 to 50," he said.

Mr Grugeon was tight-lipped about whether he had secured sponsorship from any corporate players but Qantas' environmental group manager Flyn Van Ewijk has joined the team's advisory board.

"It's been good since we launched because we've been able to start the conversation with people about what we're doing," he said.

"The two cities with the biggest followings are Brisbane and Melbourne but then we've got pockets of donors, including Gladstone, all along the Great Barrier Reef."

Mr Grugeon is banking on a last-minute push from donors to get him over the line.

"It's not for the fainthearted and, thankfully, I'm yet to speak to anybody who says it's a crap idea," he said.
