Rees talks rates, debt, division ahead of election
ALLORA-based Cr Glyn Rees has announced he is seeking re-election as a councillor, sharing his view on what he calls a "difficult term" for the Southern Downs Regional Council.
The two-term councillor has opened up about division in the chamber, debt and why he voted in favour of rate rises.
While many candidates have promised to cap rates at CPI, Cr Rees says he's not going to make promises he can't keep.
He's described capping rates at CPI as "impossible".
"I don't like voting for rate rises but if I was placed in the same position as last year I would vote in favour," he said.
"I'm not leading the charge for rate rises but we have to be mindful of cost of maintaining our level of services.
"We have to be mindful of the fact the community's pocket is only so deep - as councillors we're not exempt from how that feels."
Cr Rees has been quite vocal about Allora issues in council in the past.
However, he has not commented on current Grain X issues.
As a resident living close to the Herbert St site, he's declared a conflict of interest and on advice removed himself from the debate.
Cr Rees said the council had taken steps to try and appease concerns.
"It's positive that we've been able to take steps to work with Grain X to meet an understanding for the betterment of all concerned," he said.
"All rural towns need industry and if it's there, we all have to work together in some sort of harmony."
Another Allora issue that has Cr Rees' attention is the culverts on Allora-Clifton Rd.
"For me I'd like to see the culverts considered in the council budget sooner than later," he said.
"I'd like to see that go ahead with a detour around it."
If re-elected Cr Rees would like to continue working on the council's five-to-ten-year plans.
He said teamwork was vital and he believed the next term of council would not be as divided.
"There's no doubt there are differences around the council but I feel everyone around the table has recognised that and learnt from that," he said.
"People are sick to death of how the council is running itself - they want to see constructive stuff coming out of council."
Away from the council chamber, Cr Rees has been heavily involved in dozens of sporting and community groups, with numerous life memberships.
