Migrant group launched for Refugee Week in Warwick

REFUGEE Week kicks off this weekend and on the Southern Downs it brings with it a positive step forward.

The Southern Downs Refugee and Migrant Network has been launched to coincide with Refugee Week.

The newly formed group aims to advocate for refugees and migrants, as well as supporting them in settling in and welcoming them into the community.

SDRAMN community engagement leader Sue Hamlet said while there wasn't a significant population of asylum seekers in the area, there were many migrants and some refugees.

"What we at SDRAMN want to offer is support for people who are navigating transition into Australian society," she said.

"This can be an overwhelming experience, particularly if English is a second language.

"The services we may offer will be determined by the needs of people who seek us out, and by the availability of our members and volunteers."

Mrs Hamlet said the group would be able to open their doors on a regular basis when volunteers receive cultural training and induction.

"SDRAMN also seeks to demystify the rhetoric about refugees and asylum seekers, and engage in advocacy for more humane immigration policy," she said.

"Our community engagement team will be happy to talk with groups and organisations about these issues, and bring facts and mythbusters into the light of day."

At the forefront of the groups aims, according to Mrs Hamlet, is to be the friendly face of the region for people born overseas.

"This is a welcoming community, and we hope our presence will make that evident to anyone looking in on our community's activities," she said.

While a multicultural friendship picnic planned for Sunday has been postponed, the SDRAMN will have a movie night at the School of Total Education on Thursday.

Freedom Stories is the film that will be screened on the night.

Entry is $15 for adults, concession $10 or $50 for a family.

Tickets are available at headspace Warwick, Ray White Real Estate or online at www.eventbrite.com.au/e/freedom-stories-film-night-tickets
