Regatta sets sail on Leslie Dam
ANYONE with a sailing boat or a little interest in sailing is welcome to Leslie Dam at the weekend for a Brisbane 18 Footers Club Regatta.
There will be six 18-footer teams and several smaller 12-foot skiffs, junior class boats and camera boats.
The sailors will camp at the Warwick Sailing Club grounds on the foreshore of Leslie Dam.
Both Saturday and Sunday, there will be a mix of sailing boat races in the morning with historical 10ft skiffs to the latest high tech modern 18 footers racing in the afternoon.
Club representative Adam Young said 18 foot skiffs were the fastest sailing mono hulled skiffs in the world.
Spectators are welcome to the sailing club area at the dam and will have an opportunity to receive a free ticket in a raffle to be drawn at 12.30pm Saturday in which five people from Warwick and surrounding areas will be able to crew as part of a team for a special race at noon Sunday.
"Come along on Saturday from 11am to watch the sailing and those confident enough to crew on a sailing boat on Sunday can go in the raffle," Young said.
"The five winners will be a major part of the teams of three," Young said.
"Obviously, the people we want to attract need a reasonable level of fitness but we will make sure we look after the five individuals who win a free crew placement on Sunday."
The Warwick Sailing Club is involved with the weekend and is organising lunchtime barbecues on Saturday and Sunday. More information from club representative Gerry Roche on 4661 4028.
