Region saves $2m in budget from cheaper contractors

CONSISTENT diesel prices and cheaper contract road workers are the two main reasons the Southern Downs Regional Council has come in $2.04 million under budget for the year to date.

Manager of finance Tony Brett wrote the report that was presented to the councillors during last week's general meeting.

"As at 31 January 2013, the net surplus is $8.11 million compared to the forecasted surplus of $6.07 million," he said.

"This results in a positive year to date variance of $2.04 million."

Mr Minuti said operational and material costs accounted for most of the savings.

"This is mostly due to reduced costs for Main Roads and contract works, general road maintenance, the timing of payments for waste management contracts and under expenditure on diesel fuel."

The next budget review will be done at the end of the month.
