Region shows its heart for young Angus Bowles

THE support of the Southern Downs community behind the Bowles family was reinforced once again yesterday.

Warwick East State School P &C Committee president Cheri O'Neill handed over a check to Sonya Bowles, to help pay for the treatment of eight-year-old Angus, who needs medical treatment in the US.

The family is likely to secure a government grant, however, it will only cover the cost of an adult flight, Angus' flight and the treatment bill, leaving many other costs such as accommodation and a second adult flight for the family to cover.

"We've been blown away by people wanting to help," Mrs Bowles said.

"We only moved here two years ago but everyone in the community has really come together.

"It's only reinforced our choice to move to Maryvale."

The school held three fundraisers for Angus, a Cupcake Day, a meal deal at the school canteen and a "guess the snakes in the jar" competition to raise money for Angus, who will have a medical procedure in either Phoenix, Arizona, or Houston, Texas, later this year.

"It's a great school," she said.

"We're really grateful for everything they have done.

"Angus loves it here and we never have a worry when he's (at school) because he's so looked after."

Warwick East State School principal Warren Elder said he was pleased about the way the school had come together.

"I'm absolutely proud of the way the whole community has given generously," Mr Elder said.

"You could see how much it meant to Mrs Bowles when she was handed the cheque.

"All the fundraisers that have been put on have been wonderful bits of organisation."

Mr Elder said the support was more than the monetary value.

"I think it's nice for the family just to know they are being supported, as well as the money," he said.

"Every little bit of money helps but it's having that feeling of the whole community being behind them as well."
