Remote car locks go haywire across city

SOME could have put it down to a flat car key battery, others to a bit of bad luck or the more suspicious to some sort of supernatural occurrence.

But in actual fact the reason many Rose City motorists are having issues locking and unlocking their cars with their remotes in the CBD is an interferring "rogue signal".

A rogue signal is caused by some sort of fault in an electronic device and it's been happening in the Warwick CBD for close to a month.

But the signal is not entirely rogue, only affecting certain types of cars parked between the Grafton and King St intersections on Palmerin St in business hours.

The body in charge of monitoring these rogue signals is the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

ACMA Media Communications spokesman for the group Blake Murdoch said it was not the first time a rogue signal had tampered with people's car remotes.

"Almost all of these (instances) that we've seen are normally a low-powered consumer device that has developed a fault and is constantly transmitting," he said.

"In a retail area, we'd be expecting likely suspects to be shop entry sensors, wireless doorbells, wireless fans, wireless audio and possibly wireless weather stations."

Warwick Police Station Officer in Charge Stewart Day said the police had been made aware of the issue.

Senior Sergeant Day urged residents to check their cars were locked before walking away from them, no matter where they were parked.

"If they are unable to lock their car with their remote it is important to lock it with the key manually," he said.

Kenny Schmidt, from Schmidt Towing, who said he had been called to the affected area at least four times in the past month, also recommended using the key to lock and unlock the doors in the affected part of the street.

"I have experienced it myself personally as well," he said.

"The problem is when you lock the car with the remote it also immobilises the car, which means you can still unlock it with the key but you will not be able to start the car until you press the unlock button."

As the unlock button is not working drivers are being left in very sticky situations.

Mr Schmidt said after towing the cars around the corner the driver had been able to unlock the car with the remote and go on his merry way.

The Daily News took to the street yesterday afternoon to try and get to the bottom of the situation.

A few businesses within the area had not heard of the issue but others like John Walsh from Warwick Watchmakers and Jewellers said for the past month they've been noticing the problem.

"I couldn't unlock my car the other day," he said.

"I went back a few hours later and it was fine.

"We've had a few people come in and ask for new batteries for their remotes as well."

Karla Bacon from Warwick Outdoors and Sports said she'd been stuck last week as well.

"There have been heaps of car alarms going off," she said.

"I guess it's because people are trying to get into their cars.

"I couldn't believe it when my car wouldn't lock and then I couldn't get it to unlock.

"It's just all very bizarre and I hope the issue is solved soon."

Showtime Saddlery owner Gina Doulis has only relocated to Palmerin St within the last month and hoped it was not her who was causing the issue.

"I've only got an internet stick, so surely that couldn't be causing the problem," she said.

While the Southern Downs Regional Council and the Warwick Police are unable to put a stop to the rogue signal Mr Murdoch said if businesses and residents contacted them by emailing interference@acma.gov.au or phoning 1300 850 115 they would send someone out to investigate the situation.
