Repaired roadway starts to crack up

POTHOLES have begun to appear on recently repaired sections of Freestone Rd since repair teams left only weeks ago.

The $1.3million project covering the 3km between Ogilvie Rd and Freestone Creek Rd intersections was delivered as part of the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.

Wet weather seems to have taken its toll on the newly laid bitumen causing a problem for drivers and cyclists alike.

Contractors, Shamrock Civil, headed up the project which is expected to finish in a few weeks, much to the dissatisfaction of locals.

"It's far too corrugated; we just can't ride on it any more," said recreational bike rider Scott Thompson. Scott and his cycle club, dubbed 'The Bracker Rd boys', have had enough of the half-done repairs.

"I wouldn't be very pleased if I was paying for it. I just don't think they have done a very good job".

The Freestone Rd repairs are part of a joint funded project by the federal and state governments, in a 75-25 split.

Since the scheme the cycle club has been unable to travel along its usual route which was once chosen for its rolling hills and smooth ride.

"It's also about safety, the lack of line work means it's hard for us, let alone drivers to see the road on a foggy day," Scott said.

A temporary seal (or primer seal) has been applied as a temporary measure to protect the road surface while it cures.

The road's final seal is due next month at the project's conclusion.

Shamrock Civil was unavailable for comment.
