Repatriation begins for Toowoomba MH17 victims

THE children of Toowoomba MH17 crash victims Dr Roger and Dr Jill Guard can move on with their grieving process now their parents' bodies have been identified.

Paul Guard said the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had given a number of options to his family on how his parents might be returned to Australia.

"Some family members may decide to go to The Netherlands as part of the process," Dr Guard said.

"We are still discussing these options within the family at this time."

He said his family was notified of the development on Wednesday evening.

"As a family we are glad that both Roger and Jill have been identified as it allows us to move forward with the grieving process.

"We would like to thank the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Government for their efforts.

"Our thoughts are also with all the other families affected by this tragedy at this time, and we hope they also receive word on identification of their loved ones soon."

Dr Guard has reiterated his calls for peace in the eastern part of the Ukraine.

"I believe the true cause of the death of my parents is the conflict itself and I will continue to speak out about the need for the violence to stop.

"There has to be a political solution to the problem.

"There needs to be much stronger sanctions on the Russian government, but also pressure on the Ukrainian government to stop escalating the conflict and to open lines of communication with the separatists.

"Fighting is not the solution, and only causes more innocent people to suffer."

No plans have yet been made for a funeral service but it is likely a private ceremony will be held in Toowoomba.
