Replica rat to race at VW Warwick weekend
DRAG RACING: Craig Hughes will be driving the drag rat beetle in this weekend's VW Warwick weekend at Warwick Dragway.
"I built the first drag rat beetle back in 2006 as an example of how to go racing on a budget,” Hughes said.
"The drag rat was raced in Warwick and Portland in the VW series and in 2010 I sold it to Ben Robinson.
"I then bought another VW and have built it as a replica drag rat beetle and I will race this one in Warwick this weekend.
"I finished work on it at 8.30pm Wednesday after four months of work off and on.”
This weekend's meeting will herald the first run for the replica drag rat beetle.
"I have no expectation this weekend, only to get down the track.
"The first drag rat beetle did eight-second passes,” he said.
As an incentive for drivers this weekend, Hughes will give $50 to any driver who beats him in a head-to-head clash.
"It will have a maximum six runs, I'm not that rich to give too many $50s away,” he said.
After three years with just VW meetings in Warwick, the VW series will return next year with meetings at Portland and Warwick.
The Warwick District Drag Racing Association will assist with the running of this weekend's meeting.
Action will start at 9.30am Saturday with a display in Leslie Park. Action at the dragway from 1pm Saturday and 9am Sunday.
