What rural women want is training

A NEW report released by women's advocacy group, the National Rural Women's Coalition has identified that rural women want to undertake training that will enable them to communicate more purposefully and powerfully in order to grow their rural communities.

The report, What Do Rural Women Want To Know, outlines how women want to use digital communication technologies, public speaking and effective media skills to advocate for their local community or interest area.

NRWC president Irene Mills AM said the survey results demonstrated how rural, remote and regional women valued being able to exchange information, ideas, opinions and thoughts about themselves, their business and communities.

"It can be difficult to keep up with emerging communication technologies and ensuring that the chosen form of communication undertaken by an individual is effective and best practice," Mrs Mills

said.

"Rural, remote and regional women have said they want to learn about new digital communication technologies and effective verbal communication so they can better connect with other rural, remote and regional women and subsequently focus the attention of the broader community on issues and concerns affecting their communities."

The What Do Rural Women Want To Know report was commissioned by the NRWC following the success of the A cuppa with… series which allowed rural women to participate in free webinars and e-networking opportunities from their home location.

Mrs Mills said it was important for the NRWC to get feedback on A cuppa with… in order to inform future planning.

Topics to be considered in future planning include advocacy and lobbying skills, business budgeting and financial management, fundraising and sustainable volunteerism.

"By asking rural, remote and regional women what they want to learn about we ensure women have access to up-to-date information which will enhance their skills and knowledge," Mrs Mills said.
