Residents shocked by drivers putting lives at risk in fog

THICK fog blanketed Warwick for the past couple of mornings causing some residents to fear for their safety after some drivers failed to take the proper precautions.

Residents spoke out about the dangers of driving in the fog without lights on, with one driver saying she was almost hit by an oncoming vehicle.

Donna Page took to Facebook to give a "thumbs down” to drivers who forget they can't be seen in the fog.

"Nearly got wiped out by a sudden silver car coming out of the fog this morning,” she said.

Bridgette Brown was also shocked by the number of people driving without their lights on.

"Just glad there weren't any accidents!,” she said.

Kathy Duncan agreed, especially after witnessing a beginner who hadn't been given the proper advice.

"Thumbs down also to the leaner driver's supervisor in the fog today for not telling them to turn on their lights,” she said.

Warwick Police Sergeant Greg Burton said while police had not received reports of dangerous driving in the fog, it was important to use fog lights or regular low beam lights in foggy conditions.

"Having the lights on will assist with visibility for vehicles travelling towards you or for pedestrians,” he said.

"If you haven't got them on, you may hit a pedestrian or a car that doesn't see you and crosses in front of them.”

Sgt Burton urged motorists to always drive to the conditions, including adhering to the appropriate speed limit.

"Just because the speed limit is 100km/hr doesn't mean you have to drive to that if it's foggy,” he said.

But the next couple of mornings should bring an end to the thick fog for now.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Michelle Berry said there would be clearer mornings for the next couple of days.

"A bit more cloud cover over the next couple of nights and that usually leads to fog not occurring,” she said.
