Resort upgrade in the spotlight

A MASSIVE expansion plan for Bestbrook Mountain Resort east of Warwick that could result in the "gateway" to the Southern Downs taking on a whole new dimension will be debated by the council tomorrow.

Councillors will vote on a development application including a wedding chapel, more accommodation, a covered horse arena, festival venue, ropes course and more for the prominent tourism venue on the Cunningham Hwy near Maryvale.

While the resort was up for sale a couple of years ago after a stoush with the council over second-hand car sales on the highway verge, Bestbrook owner Ray Vincent yesterday said he was "ready to move with the times".

"We've had a couple of good years and have turned a corner and I do personally believe it can bring more people to the region, which is what we're all about," Mr Vincent told the Daily News.

"In my terminology it's called bums on seats.

"The music festival we hold here once a year attracts a lot of people, but we thought we might go for a country and western theme and do B&S (Bachelor and Spinster) type things."

Other new attractions which could spring up at Bestbrook include bush golf, tennis and orienteering, with six proposed music festivals a year scaled back by the council to one, along with self-contained accommodation for 58 more visitors.

The proposal attracted seven submissions from surrounding property owners, including issues with noise from music festivals and trail and quad bikes, traffic and parking, bushfire risk and waste treatment. If approved by today's Planning Committee meeting and next week's general council meeting the expanded resort would be subject to nearly 200 council and state conditions.

Mr Vincent lost a court action taken against him by the council in 2010 over his vehicle and machinery sales display at Bestbrook.

He has also been subject to "show cause" notices issued by the council over allegedly unauthorised camping and structures.
