COMMENT: Respect must be given to Bennett
NEWS that Brisbane Broncos coach and former Warwick player Wayne Bennett could become the next coach of England, not Australia, will be a reflection on ARL league administrators, not the man himself.
The reality is we are in the professional era and whether it is Eddie Jones in rugby union or Wayne Bennett in rugby league that is the reality.
Australia has had overseas coaches in cricket and rugby union with mixed results, it works both ways.
There is a case for an Origin coach to not be a club coach but there is no case for a requirement that the Australian coach not be involved with a club, after all most international rugby league matches are played at the end of the season.
Wayne was keen to be the Australian coach at a time our results internationally are disastrous.
Without a doubt, Australia has the best players but they can't wash it at Test level.
Why didn't the ARL want a man regarded as the best in the business to be the national coach.
Just look at what he did with the Broncos last season, they missed a premiership by 20 seconds.
I can only speak for myself but good luck to Wayne if he decides to coach England or be an assistant.
Go get them Wayne, the Aussies had their chance to secure you and bureaucracy and pig-headedness got in the way.
Test footy needs passionate people like Wayne Bennett involved.
