REVEALED: 5 pubs Warwick misses
WARWICK used to have about one pub for every man, woman, child and dog.
Well, not quite, but there were an awful lot.
And probably quite a few that have been long forgotten.
But there are still a few that resonate with locals - for their prime position in town, their friendly and not-so-friendly crowds, for their smell and simply for the gorgeous buildings in which the beer was kept cold.
Once upon a time, a pub crawl from the Palace to the Horse and Jockey was a serious endeavour (and perhaps a little fool-hardy).
Palace, Langham, Grand, Mayfair, Criterion, Club, Parkview, Warwick Hotel and the HnJ.
Today less than half of these remain.
Here are some of the pubs Warwick misses:
1: The Universal Hotel
WHEN the Uni went up in flames it was one of the biggest nights in Warwick's history.
It was August 24, 2009.
Word spread faster than the fire and crowds turned out in their masses to watch on as history crumbled to the ground.
Videos were even beamed to Facebook of the old girl's demise.
It was a favourite for an after-weekend-sports beer, but they were always pretty quick to jump onto anyone under age (at least they were in my case).
A beautiful old building, a classic Queensland pub and it is sorely missed.
2: The Parkview Hotel
SO NAMED for its vantage point opposite Leslie Park on Palmerin St, the Parkview has an almost wild west reputation.
It was known as the place to go when you couldn't get in anywhere else and also had a reputation for a fair bit of biffo back in the day.
It went through a few facelifts over the years but couldn't shake a dodgy reputation.
It eventually disappeared in the mid 2000s.
3: The Mayfair Hotel
One of Warwick's grand old stayers, the Mayfair was built in the 1880s and took pride of place smack bang in the centre of town, opposite the Post Office.
Under the watchful eye of the TJ Byrnes monument the Mayfair Hotel had more than its fair share of stories.
One story circulated about a real estate agent who had overindulged in alcohol, and woke up in the toilet to find himself locked inside the building.
He was forced to sheepishly wait for the cleaners to arrive to let him out.
Another yarn told of two well-known locals getting into a fight.
The story goes that one of these gentlemen was literally punched out of his shirt.
Others remember the Mayfair for the smell. Beer-soaked carpet.
It's been gone so long we couldn't even find a photo of it.
4: The Grand Hotel
A MAJESTIC old pub that made way for a carpark for a shopping centre.
Featuring counter meals to die for and that veranda, perfect for a cold beer on a hot Warwick day.
Grand bartender Kay Freeman still lives in Warwick, she was the self-proclaimed 'best barmaid in Warwick' and could apparently carry six schooners in one hand.
We're reliably told that's her car on the far right of this photograph.
5: The Palace Hotel
WHAT happened to this pub?
A couple of years ago it was going strong. Pool tables, a bottle shop, the odd rave party, plush dining rooms with a revamped menu, accommodation and a truly classic long, thin public bar.
Today it lies empty and quiet and has done so for far too long.
Last time it made the news was due to some young larrikins breaking in and causing a bit of damage to the place.
Where does one go now after a wedding at St Mary's to wait for the reception?
