Revheads set to get the V-dub bug

RESIDENTS of Warwick will be turning their heads this weekend, when the city hosts the Volkswagen Nationals, the second all-VW drag racing meet of 2011.

Up to 90 Volkswagens are expected to arrive for the premier VW motorsport weekend, which has secured a home at the Warwick Dragway.

VW Magazine editor Craig Hughes said the field this year was quite big, ranging from bog stock through to modified car models, including 1965 split-screen Kombies.

"These are exceptional numbers for a one-make event, the only such series in Australia," Mr Hughes said.

Now in its sixth year at the dragway, Mr Hughes said the 1/8 mile VW Warwick track is a perfect introduction for the novice, yet long enough to entice professionals to go hard.

"If you have never tried drag racing, but have always harboured a desire to give it a try, these all-VW race meets provide a non-threatening environment where you can learn at your own pace and collect some useful tips from the experienced racers," Mr Hughes said.

The weekend program will begin from 9.30am, with the traditional Saturday morning street parade and static display in the Warwick CBD at Leslie Park an excellent opportunity for all VW owners, competing or spectating, to showcase their cars to the public.

From 11am, drivers will head to the Warwick Dragway for scrutineering, before being given practice time and qualifying from 1pm to 5pm.

After 6pm, the track will close to the public, leaving drivers and crew members to recuperate before race day.

Gates will open again to the public by 9am on Sunday morning, where there will be a swap meet, a Show 'n' Shine showcase and various trade stalls.

By 10.30 am, the competition will begin, in round-robin style, plus the final.

There will also be a lunch-break, which will include a burnout competition at the back of the staging lanes.

The general admission cost to the Warwick Dragway is $10 per day.
