Newrybar crash victim Richie had been a "bundle of joy"

RICHARD James Wells was described as a 'bundle of joy' by his bereaved family and friends yesterday as they farewelled the 19-year-old at his funeral.

A crowd of around 250, including many young people, packed Ballina's Rainbow Chapel where they remembered the laughter and kindness Richard had always brought to others.

The Ballina High School student, who died in the car crash along with three friends at Newrybar last week, was always available to help others, the congregation heard, especially looking out for his two sisters, Tammy and Jody.

"We could always depend on him, and he would make us smile whenever you were down," the sisters said in a moving eulogy at the ceremony.

Richard was remembered as the one who 'brought laughter' by a family friend and as 'cheeky' by one of his aunties: "He was cheeky, but he had so much love to give," she said.

A close school friend of Richard's described how he would always help anyone who needed him: "I am honoured to have been your friend. I love you Richie, always."

Ballina mayor David Wright also attended the funeral and offered his deepest condolences on behalf of the community that remains in shock over the deaths of the four young people.

The ceremony to honour Richard was not only tear-filled, but also filled with heartfelt music with friends and family choked with emotion as they sang 'Missing You' and 'Heaven'.

"My dearest and only son, I am a proud mother to have raised such a lovely, well respected young man; you have always had a good heart," his mother Ruby Wells wrote in the order of service.

"My first born, you will be in my heart forever."

Richard's father, John Wells, described his son as his best friend.

"To my beautiful son, you were not just my son, you were my best friend and best buddy. We did everything together and my world is not the same without you here," Mr Wells wrote.
