Riders eye off final round of the APRA national finals today
RODEO: Fred Osman is the best chance for Warwick area success with one round to go in The Carlton Dry Warwick Rodeo National Finals at the Warwick Showgrounds.
The top-15 in each Australian Professional Rodeo Association event are competing over four rounds in Warwick for the pro titles.
The final round is Sunday afternoon at 2pm. The finals will be preceded by second-division and junior rodeo events and some campdrafting.
After missing out in round 1, Osman won the Friday and Saturday night rounds in the bareback bronc ride. His score of 80 on Saturday was up with the best of the rodeo.
Defending champion David Worsfold from Wandoan won the first round and placed in the next two and remains a strong contender for the title.
Osman now operates the family property at Cameron's Corner but for one season, based himself on a property his family then owned at Gore between Warwick and Inglewood.
In the open bull ride, Tamworth cowboy Jason O'Hearn was the only one of 15 bull riders on Saturday night to make time. A past APRA champion, O'Hearn scored 80.
Millmerran cowboy John McNamee won round 3 in the saddle bronc with a score of 80. Defending titleholder Brad Pierce was second in 76.
In the rope and tie, Emerald cowboy Shane Kenny recorded his third time of the finals to win round 3. Ebenezer rider Mark Knox also has three placings. Placing in each round is a key to winning titles in the APRA.
In cowgirl ranks, Danielle Marshall travelled from Natone in Tasmania to win round 3 of breakaway roping, her first win at national finals level. Shianne O'Donoghue-Kent from Bunyip in Victoria is ranked 1 and was the round 3 winner in the barrel race.
