Riders place in run up to Warwick junior rodeo
RODEO: After recording four placings at St Brendan's Rodeo in Yeppoon last weekend, the Warwick High Schools Rodeo team is ready for a hometown rodeo on Saturday.
The rodeo starts at 1pm Saturday at the Warwick Showgrounds with seven events.
The highest profile competitor from the Warwick team will be Kobe Miller who currently leads junior team roping heeler, junior breakaway roping and junior high point cowboy standings in the APRA.
Kobe often competes in the same roping team as his father Jeff, a past all-around champion in the APRA.
He is currently 17th in open team roping heeler standings and boosted his chances of a top-15 finish and qualification for The Warwick Rodeo National Finals on October 26-29 with a fourth in open team roping at Yeppoon.
But Miller's total focus this weekend will be on his hometown junior rodeo.
He won't be the only rider going into the weekend with confidence.
Warwick High student Nikki Burraston was second in breakaway roping and third in barrel racing last weekend and will compete in both events at the Warwick Showgrounds on Saturday.
Scots PGC student Arne Thornberry was third in junior saddle bronc in a strong field at Yeppoon.
Other Southern Downs riders to place in junior events at Yeppoon were Latisha Murphy, fourth, Eliza Johnstone, fifth, and Savannah Halley, ninth, in the barrel race.
Tyler Aspinall was seventh in the junior steer ride. Aspinall and Johnstone are the two girls set to battle it out with the boys in the steer ride on Saturday.
After this weekend, the next rodeo on the Southern Downs will be the Warwick Cowboys Rodeo at Father Ranger Oval on September 23.
