Risdon Oval set for gala day
IAN Wallis is upbeat about a gala day of rugby union planned for Risdon Oval on Saturday.
The Warwick junior president said the club had one additional team, an under-6 combination, playing this season.
“We have six girls playing in the under-6 team, Lucy Bourke scored seven tries at Goondiwindi in a game before the school holidays,” Wallis said.
“The girls can mix it with the boys in the younger grades.
“It is good boys and girls from the same families can each play in the younger age groups.”
Four junior games will be played on Saturday against Saints/USQ.
Warwick has more than 40 registered players this season. Most games are in Warwick or Toowoomba with one trip each season to Dalby and Goondiwindi.
Wallis said the junior club players would be sporting new jerseys on the weekend.
“The jerseys are similar to the Water Rats senior jerseys and are black and white, the club colours,” he said.
“Games up to under 11 are played under modified rules. In the under 6 age group, games are played on a quarter field with no tackling; the player with the ball has to stop when they are tagged.”
The current year is the third for the fledgling junior club.
More players are welcome to training each Wednesday and Friday at 5.30pm or at the games this Saturday.
Wallis said the club could cater for more players in each grade.
“Last year, our under 10 side played a curtain raiser to the Australia/South Africa Test at Suncorp Stadium,” Wallis said.
“We won’t get a game at Suncorp this season but will organise a bus to take juniors and their parents to the Test against the All Blacks in August.”
