Child care fees raise concern

WHILE some say families may struggle with higher child care fees due to legislation changes in the industry, others have welcomed the move to see a higher staff to child ratio.

Nicole Laidlaw, Colleen Crummy and Kayla Savage all have children in child care and said they would pay between $2 and $5 a day extra for each child. The trio said it was worth it if there was more staff on hand to look after their kids.

"They need more staff, I reckon it's safer," Mrs Savage said.

But she said she was thankful she had only had one child in day care and thought other families would be harder hit.

"Many families are already struggling," she said.

Warwick man Jason Worth said he had two children in child care and had heard about the fee increases on the news but wasn't sure how much extra he would have to pay.

"As far as I'm concerned, they have enough staff anyway, we have had no problems," he said.

"But I am not concerned about the extra money, if we still lived in Brisbane we would be, but not here."

The new legislation - which kicked in on January 1 - requires certain ratios of staff to children depending on the ages of the kids in care.

Centres will have until January 2018 to meet final staffing requirements, with changes implemented annually building up to the deadline.

Centres can achieve the ratios by cutting places or employing more staff, either way, families (or the government for those receiving rebates) will have to foot the bill.

Educators can apply to delay the changes.
