Cowboys must square ledger with Warriors

AFTER going down 66-0 in their last clash, Warwick Cowboys will be eager to set the record straight during tonight's encounter with Wattles, but coach Ken Coles said coming out on top would not be an easy feat.

"We were given an awful touch-up when we played them last time," Coles said.

"They have been the best team we have played this season. There is no doubt about that.

"It will be a hard day at the office, but we have improved since we last played them - the question is if we have improved enough."

Wattles are sitting third on the Toowoomba Rugby League ladder, with Cowboys well below them in eighth spot.

Warriors coach Luke Duggan said that at this stage of the season every game was important.

"The Cowboys always lift to play Wattles. We are expecting a physical, hard-fought match this evening," he said.

"We got away from the Cowboys in our last meeting.

"But they have built on their line-up with the addition of players of the calibre of Ryan McIvor and Garry Ellery and will command plenty of respect."

Coles said with no injuries Cowboys would be putting their best possible team on Platz Oval tonight.

"There will be no excuses," he said.

"If we get beaten it is because we were beaten by the better team.

"It would be nice if the ball bounced our way tonight.

"They boys have worked hard and deserve a good win."

Wattles, on the other hand, are not injury-free and will be without back-rower Dan Manley.

Manley's spot will be filled by Kim Phoenix and new addition Brandon Purcell will start from the bench.

Duggan said Wattles would be led onto the field by new recruit Pat Manley, who had an impressive game against Souths last round.

"It was a gutsy effort against a very good side," he said. "We can still do better, but the efforts of front-rower Pat Manley in particular was outstanding."

This afternoon's action will start with Under-18s at 3pm, followed by the old boy match-up at 4.30pm.

Reserves will kick off at 5.30pm followed by A-grade at 7pm.
