Roadworks unearth bones at Alexandra Headland

WORKERS have stumbled across bones and broken bottles from an old campsite dating back to the early 1900s in front of Alex Surf Club.

Contractors doing roadworks on Alexandra Pde found the artefacts about 9.30am yesterday.

Maroochydore CIB Detective Sergeant Graeme Farlow said a few bones and a partial denture were unearthed.

"It doesn't appear to be suspicious and they (the bones) don't appear to be human," he said.

Det Sgt Farlow said the items were examined by scientific personnel and found to be from the early 1900s.

"That area back in the early 1900s was a camping area. It could have stemmed from those days," he said.

Broken glass was found also. One bottle made by a Brisbane manufacturer was dated 1890.

Det Sgt Farlow said it was not uncommon for old items to be found during excavations.

"The probability of excavating broken bottles is high in those areas," he said.
