Roberts comes out trumps in 27-hole golf competition

GOLF: Jay Roberts won on a countback from Geoff Hinze to win the Warwick Credit Union Canning Downs Open over 27 holes at the Warwick Golf Club on Sunday.

The event was the only one-day 27 hole event for the year and attracted 33 players in men's and ladies' ranks.

Geoff almost made it a husband-and-wife affair in the winner's circle as his wife Sam won the ladies gross on the day.

Club captain Tim Sutton was third one shot behind Roberts and Geoff Hinze. Josh Hynes won the best nett from Tony Kahler.

"Jay hit a 74 off the stick for the first 18 and then 39 on the third nine,” Sutton said.

"Geoff started with a 75 and then hit 38 to make up one shot. The new computer system works out the countback which looks at the last six and if still the same the last three.

"Jay is playing off a handicap of five so hit his handicap on the first 18.”

Margaret Adcock and Judy Lester were second and third behind Sam Hinze, the current Downs and South-West champion.

Lester won the nett event on a countback from Jill Barnes.

Sutton said the Canning Downs event would be moved to a Saturday next year and played over 18 holes.

"The change will ensure all our regular members play,” he said.

"The majority of the members play on a Saturday and have found the 27 holes takes too long on a Sunday.”

The change was made at a club meeting on Monday night.

Open day coming up

THE Warwick Golf Club will hold its Ladies Open Day on September 6.

The day is all about participation, with families able to play all day for just $5 per family.
