RESIDENTS from Akooramak retirement village were treated to a day at the Warwick Rodeo on Tuesday.

Safe from the suns rays on the balcony of the Douglas Feez Pavilion, the group had the best view of the Warwick Showgrounds.

Barbara Woods from the famous rodeo family is no stranger to the Warwick event. "I've been coming to the rodeo since 1953," she said.

"I love the whole atmosphere.

"The people are great and I really enjoy watching the bronc riding."

Barbara's late husband Alan Woods is part of Australian rodeo history, as the only man to ever ride the famous bronco Curio.

Mr Woods became a legend when he rode the previously unrideable mare, Curio, at Marrabel, South Australia, in 1953.

A life-sized statue of Alan and Curio stands proudly in Marrabel to mark the famous ride.

Alan and his wife Barbara's children were the late Robert Woods and Deana Pendergast, and both competed successfully here in Australia.

Robert toured the American circuit before returning to Warwick to compete in the Warwick Rodeo in the early 80s.

Mrs Woods will be cheering on her great-nephew Heath Chambers from Victoria in the bronc riding.

Roma Monaghan's grandson Michael Maher is another contestant in the Warwick Rodeo bronc riding out to snatch the winning trophy.

Mr Maher has competed in America and has a big supporter in grandmother,, Roma.

"He's a lovely boy, he deserves to win," Roma Monaghan said.

"He told me as soon as he knows if he's won he'll call and let me know."

The start of the bronc riding competition began yesterday and will continue all weekend.

Entrants compete in bareback and saddle bronc classes tonight from 6pm.
