Texas rodeo star right here in Warwick
RODEO: John Turvey will bring some of his riding form from the United States to Texas for a show rodeo tomorrow night.
He will compete in the saddle bronc ride in the first rodeo at Texas in nine years.
Turvey, who hails from St George, is a regular at the Warwick Rodeo in both rodeo and campdrafting.
Matt Doak, of Bundarra, New South Wales, is the contractor for bulls at the Texas Rodeo and Gill Brothers will bring horses from the Upper Horton area of New South Wales.
Doak said the events on the program included the open and second-division bull rides, open saddle bronc ride and a bullock ride.
Turvey will face some of his toughest opposition from Tamworth rider Denny Swadling and Queensland star Lachlan Ezzy.
There are 17 riders in the saddle bronc and 29 in the two bull rides.
Warwick cowboy Scott Glasby will compete for the first time in more than a year in a field of 16 in the open bull ride.
Wes Brooker will travel from Tamworth for the open bull ride.
Entries for the bull and saddle bronc rides have closed but bullock ride entries can be made at the secretary's office to 5pm tomorrow. Spectator entry to the rodeo is included with show entry.
The first rodeo events are at 5.30pm tomorrow and action will go to 9pm followed by entertainment.
Campdraft
THE final sports events of the show will be a campdraft on Sunday at the Texas Showgrounds.
The campdraft is being organised by Texas Show Society president Greg Finlay and the four drafts have attracted 250 nominations.
Action starts at 7am Sunday with the maiden draft. There will be novice, juvenile and open drafts.
The judges Stephen Wells, Bill Abraham and Mick Coyne are all from the Texas region.
Texas campdrafter Kelly Rousell will be one of the older riders in the competition.
There will be finals in all three senior drafts.
