CROWNED: Warwick queen claims national rodeo title

AFTER careful consideration, the 2018 Miss Rodeo Australia, Dakota Michaelis, is stepping down from her title and handing the reins to Warwick's Ashleigh Grant.

Focusing on her competitive rookie title, Miss Michaelis made the decision to pass on her duties of Miss Rodeo Australia.

"It's been a very full on year that's kept me busy. But I did enjoy the opportunity and I love to promote the sport," Miss Michaelis said.

"I wish Ashleigh all the best in the role, I know she'll smash it, she's a beautiful girl."

Office manager for the Australian Professional Rodeo Association Karen Burraston said it was rare for a competitor to obtain a Miss Rodeo Australia title.

"We haven't had a competitor crowned for quite a few years, it's a big commitment," Mrs Burraston said.

Miss Grant was shocked when offered the title and will be taking a break from competing to fulfil the duties.

"It wasn't something I even thought was a possibility, but I'm excited to step up into the role and promote the sport of rodeo," Miss Grant said.

"I couldn't imagine there not being a Miss Rodeo Australia.

"I do get a thrill in competing, but I will step back for the next six months, because you really need to make the most of the opportunity while it's there."

At 25 years old the Warwick local has been on the Miss Rodeo scene since 2011 and in 2016 was crowned Miss Rodeo Warwick.

Miss Grant will begin her duties in the coming weeks, heading off to Mt Isa rodeo and then flying to Darwin.

"My schedule is very full on right off the mark," Ms Grant said.

The newly crowned Miss Rodeo Australia is looking forward to the Warwick National Finals Rodeo in October this year.

"Being Miss Rodeo Australia and having the national finals in my home town will be really special," Miss Grant said.

"I'm also looking forward to meeting with Miss Rodeo America and Miss Rodeo Canada who will be attending in the leading week from the competition."

Ms Grant will fulfil the role until the crowning of the next Miss Rodeo Australia in January 2019.
