An emotional Gympie Regional Council mayor Ron Dyne resigned from office this morning.

Local Government minister David Crisafulli was among community members who wept openly as they said goodbye to a man they described as the father figure of the Gympie region.

Cr Dyne has terminal cancer and said it was not feasible for him to stay in the role in his condition.

"It's obviously not something I had planned, I had tried to avoid  this ," Cr Dyne said.

"It's not fair to the council and not fair to the community for me to continue."

Cr Dyne's resignation will be effective from December 19  and Cr Tony Perrett will be Acting Mayor until a by-election is held within the next three months.

Cr Dyne was the first elected mayor of the amalgamated Gympie Regional Council and has close to fifteen years in local government service.

In tendering his resignation, Cr Dyne expressed his profound regret at not being able to continue in his role due to the effects of cancer and thanked his fellow councillors, Council staff, the community and his family for their support and well wishes during his illness.
