Roosters to host BRL final
RUGBY LEAGUE: The Inglewood Roosters will aim for back-to-back premierships when the club hostst Tenterfield in the Border Rugby League season decider at the Macintyre Sports Complex on Saturday at 2.30pm.
Last season half Brent Osborne was captain-coach of the premiership- winning team from Inglewood and he will line up again with a burning ambition to lead his men to another victory.
This season, Osborne and Roosters fullback Brent Hearne both played for the Queensland Outback team against Far North Queensland in an NRL curtain raiser in Cairns.
Both are prolific points scorers and will go a long way to putting Inglewood on the way to a win.
Hearne hails from Millmerran, a town which has a close association with Inglewood in junior and senior rugby league.
Jamie Meddings missed some representative games in mid-season with injury but is back and leading a strong forward pack from lock.
One of the form players for the Roosters is Shane Hooper, an outstanding all round sportsman who has played fullback for Queensland Country in rugby union.
He can play in the backs and forwards, it doesn't matter, his skills set is good enough for any position on the field.
Roosters club president Dolly Bennett is quietly confident of a win.
"We had a good roll-up at training this week. The week off helped with a few niggling injuries,” Bennett said.
"Good defence is the key to win the grand final.
"I expect experienced players like our Outback representative will lead our younger players. We have five players in their first or second season for the Roosters and they are all improving.”
An Inglewood grand final tradition is for the players to enjoy a meal together after Thursday night training at the Macintyre Sports Complex, which was prepared by club volunteers this week.
"We started the dinner tradition in 2008 when we had a motivational talk from well-known footballer Warren Croft,” he said.
"The team won its first premiership that year and the tradition has continued.
"Some businesses in Inglewood have set up displays to support the Roosters.
"I am tipping half the town will be at the game.”
Gates to the ground open at 1pm Saturday.
All BRL presentations will be after the grand final.
