Rose City boxer win major awards on successive weeks
BOXING: Rose City Boxing Club member Jake Wyllie has won the boxer of the tournament award twice on the past two weekends.
Wyllie stepped up 5kg into the 69kg class and won the South East Queensland title this weekend at Beenleigh.
He won in an unanimous points decision against a Zion Boxing club member from Ipswich and was judged boxer of the tournament.
A week earlier, he won the boxer of the tournament award in the annual Caboolture tournament.
Jacko McMahon won his fight at Caboolture against a boxer from Victoria and then beat Australian 69kg champion Ben Hussain in the South East Queensland titles this weekend in the 75kg division.
Hussain is representing Australia at this year's Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas so the win is one of the best to date by McMahon.
Wyllie and McMahon will fight at Beaudesert in a tournament on Saturday.
Trainer Damien Lawler said the plan for Wyllie and McMahon was to have them in peak form for the Queensland Golden Gloves in August and then the Queensland titles in September.
