Rose City camp sites a holiday hit

WET weather did not stop tourists flocking to the Rose City during the school holidays with tourist numbers equalling that of last year.

Warwick Tourism and Events CEO Tracy Vellacott said camping proved the most popular activity.

A total of 514 adults and 68 children walked through the doors at the Warwick Visitor Information Centre during the past two weeks.

They came from Brisbane, Gold Coast and NSW.

Mrs Vellacott said the statistics couldn't be compared to last year as the centre's opening hours had changed.

"The Nissan Datsun Nationals participants enjoyed the weekend and despite a few hiccups with the weather, were able to enjoy most planned events," she said.

But Majella Kahler from Oasis Big 4 Caravan Park and chairman of WTE said she was impressed with the visitation numbers.

She said there was barely a spare room in town.

"People tended to go for short drives but were looking for good food and coffee," she said.

"Again we had problems supplying this to visitors as many remained closed due to penalty rates."

Mrs Kahler said the activities organised by WTE gave visitors the opportunity to stay.

The Easter Fair proved popular with stall holders and attendees despite the rain.

"I was surprised how many of our guests had planned prior to arrival on attending Easter Fair and planned on going with their umbrellas in tow," Mrs Kahler said.

"As an operator it is important to acknowledge the hours of preparation that go into events like this and I would like to acknowledge and thank the staff of Warwick Tourism and Events.

"As well we need to thank the many volunteers who spent part of their Easter working at Easter Fair, Glengallan Homestead, Pringle Cottage and the like and provided our visitors with activities that kept our visitors occupied.

"It would also be remiss of me to thank IGA for its generous sponsorship of Easter Fair, a sponsorship that will allow the event to grow."

With the Easter Fair done and dusted Mrs Vellacott said the tourism and events team was busy preparing for the weekend's Anzac commemorations and Jumpers and Jazz in July.
